I attended the ASME Human Powered Vehicle Challenge on Saturday and Sunday. Here is a link to my flickr set with photos and video clips of the event. I'm in the process of adding the school and bike names to the photos. I had a great time. The event was everything I had hoped it would be.

Looks like WSU-Vancouver built a pretty nice entry:

Bring back the HPV-watercraft races!

Any of these fine young folks planning to come to the HPC? There's some nice vehicles there!

I think PSU will be joining us. No reason WSU-Vancouver can't be here either. If I got my story straight the son of Bortolami's Pizza owner is a WSU-Vancouver student and involved in HPV's.

The photos of the HPV's in the rain and puddles were taken during of all things the Utility Event A race designed to showcase the HPV's as a vehicle replacement. I didn't see many dry people. Even the five of us huddled under an awning couldn't keep dry. We were hanging on trying to keep the awning from being blown away or collapsing. This is my favorite photo of the wet weather group.

Now for the big question. This will be my 100th posting. Will I no longer be tagged as a Junior Member? The truth is just a button push away. Here goes...

I can't believe the guts and deterrmination I saw on the faces of these young folks! That major squall that blew through there was more testing than anything the course could throw at them and they just "sailed" through it like it was purely motivational. Even though all the teams showed amazing grit and fortitude, I was particularly awed by this one gal who kept zinging by the pit area, not stopping to change out riders, wearing only a t shirt and shorts against the elements, and giving this Xena like attitude of defiance to the weather gods, and really pushing hard on those pedals! That defined the attitude of all the contestants for me, inspiring to say the least. With young folks like these that may step into our ranks of HPV enthusiasts, I think we are gonna be ok.

As far as I know, the PSU team expressed an interest and so did the WSU team. Couldn't get a positive answer from the OSU team, well, I'm hoping that we can get some outside influence to get them inspired to show up. Seems a shame to only use their rig once and then mothball it.  Cry

Tom, I don't know if you noticed but that bike that was "sailing along" was holding on to a canopy  Shocked Grin

It would be good to have the three teams back for a show down.

Hey Bill! Thanks for all your sage advice and for sharing your velomobile and GS with us.

It was great to meet you and hear about all that is going on in the Oregon neck of the HPV world.

I have some ASME HPV West 2009 images that I will get around to posting sometime.

Jesse, It was good to meet you guys also. I had so much fun at the ASME HPVC. The OHPV Human Power Challenge is in less than two weeks. I wish you guys were closer as there are expected to be between 9-15 velomobiles joining us from all over the west coast. We (OHPV) scored a big one when Craig Johnsen decided to bring the Left Coast Velomobile Gathering up here to Portland, Oregon this year.

I have many photos of the ASME event on my flickr site. There are 125 photos and 32 video clips. The address for my ASME flickr set is:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/wmbates/sets/72157617683648580/

Feel free to download any photos that you wish. I only ask that they are not used in a commercially without permission. Also if you have any contacts with the ASME HPVC crowd please pass along the flickr site address.

Best wishes for you HPV sucess and here's hoping that we can meet again soon.
