The faired road race promised to be a real humdinger. Not only were the "real fast guys" back for more, but 3 of the OHPV "Varna clones" were experiencing their first pedal crank in anger. Not only was it going to be their first race, they were going to do an hour-long road race.

After the start, though, the Varna clones saw nothing but the tailfeathers of Steve and Dean. The Big Gun and the Coyote have long since had their bugs worked out, while the Varnas were still being finished the night before. Both Lonnie Morse and John Williams suffered mechanical woes and exited the race, while the Big Gun clicked off laps like clockwork. In the middle of the race, he did several laps within 2 seconds of 3 minutes 30 seconds- averaging 34 miles per hour.

Despite a fair amount of wind and a slight sprinkle, they kept at it- Steve and the Big Gun finished with 18 laps under its wheels, while Dean in the Coyote completed 17 laps. This was 2 laps ahead of their nearest competitor and would have been competitive with the best Electrathon racers that we were sharing the course with that weekend. Here's the final count:
