200 meter Sprints

The 200-meter sprints were chaotic at best. The people riding streamliners wanted to get the longest possible run up to the traps, while flock of stock and super-stock vehicles promised to make it tough to give everyone a chance to make a run.

I told them what I thought should happen and the whole gang trekked to the back side of the course to start their runs. Steve Delaire had some uncharacteristic difficulty getting started- he tipped over several times before making a good start. (We later learned that he was starting on a cambered piece of pavement, which meant his starting crew thought he was vertical when he was on a tilt.) He did make a fantastic run… but the timers failed to trip properly.

So the proceedings were stopped while the pit crew frantically wiggled wires and tested connections. We eventually replaced one of the timing strips, plugged everything back in, and stomped on the strips to trigger them. Success! Of course, we were running about an hour late at this point…

But the streamliner guys got themselves started and cranked off some great top speeds, considering the cool, dense, still air. Once they got by, I was expecting a bunch of Stock and Super-Stock vehicles. It turns out the racers had made plans of their own: they caught the streamliners and sent them out for second runs, then went to the "short" start location to do their own runs.
