Human Powered Vehicle Races

Unfaired Road Race

This will be a 1 hour race for Stock and Super-Stock class racers in all divisions: men's, women's, juniors, and tandems. Placings will be determined by rider category and vehicle division.

Faired Road Race

This will be a 1 hour race for Super-Street, Streamliner and Unlimited class racers in all divisions: men's, women's, juniors, and tandems. Unlimited class racers (those unable to start without assistance) will start from the rear of the pack.
Placings will be determined by category and division.

10 mile Time Trial

Racers will start at the Start/Finish line at 30 second intervals. Each will do 5 laps (actually 9.75 miles) and will be individually timed, in all divisions: men's, women's, juniors, and tandems. Each racer will be given the white flag at the beginning of their final lap. Placings will be determined by the best time in categories and divisions.

Unfaired divisions will be run Saturday.  Faired divisions will be run Sunday.

Autocross Races

This will be for all classes.  Two separate races will be run.  One race consisting of all stock, street, and super street vehicles.  This also includes all multi-wheeled vehicles.  The second race will be for streamlined vehicles.  The course will be held on the infield with longer straight ways with several medium and low speed corners, similar to the course held at the Human Speed Championship in Battle Mountain, Nevada.

200 meter Timed Sprints

This will be for all classes. Timing traps will be set up on the front straight. Direction of travel will depend on race day weather conditions, but will probably be counter-clockwise. There will be two starting areas: All racers will proceed to the first starting area and any racer requiring the longest acceleration run possible will start from the first start area. Racers will start at one minute intervals with Faired Vehicles making their runs before the halftime break. Unfaired Vehicles will make their runs from the second starting area after the break. Racers wanting second and third runs will be able to return to the starting area
and line up for additional runs.

Placings will be determined by the fastest run of the day in all categories and divisions.

200 meter Drag Race

All out power racing for all divisions.  Event will be held on the infield area where all classes will be run against each other,
no separation of classes.  Not a timed event, purely winner of each race will move on to next bracket with single elimination only. Adequate time will be allowed for winning racers to recover prior to the next drag race.  Grudge matches are encouraged and will be allowed as time permits.

General Rules

For the most part, we use the HPRA (Human Power Race America) rules for classifying racers. We took the extra step of separating out all of the women and junior (See Junior Definition)  racers into their own categories.

Junior Definition:  14 and over race as an adult.
13 and under will be considered Junior Category Riders

Juniors will be attended during the Road Race and Timed Trial events by a guardian or parent.  Said responsible adult shall follow directly behind the junior rider at all times and shall assume responsibility of keeping the junior rider alert to operate and safely control the bike at all times with respect to all other riders and prevailing conditions.  The Parent/Guardian must either be a registered entrant themselves in the Human Power Challenge or will need to register
for the minimum insurance and membership fees.
Juniors will only race with juniors during the Drag, Autocross and 200 Meter Timed event,
they need not be attended by an adult.

Here's how the HPRA defines the vehicles:

STOCK - Stock vehicles are vehicles with any number of wheels. Vehicle may not incorporate any form of fairing, or part of fairing. Wheel discs/covers are allowed.

MULTI-RIDER - Same rules as STOCK, except must have two or more riders.

These represent "STOCK" vehicles:

SUPER-STOCK- vehicles are vehicles with any number of wheels. Entries may have any number of riders, male or female. Wheel discs/covers are allowed. A front or a rear fairing is allowed. The edge of the fairing toward the rider may not penetrate the imaginary plane formed by joining the rider's shoulder centerpoints with hip centerpoints. No part of the fairing may be moved in entering, exiting, starting or stopping.

These are "SUPER-STOCK" vehicles:

SUPER-STREET- vehicles are vehicles with any number of wheels. Entries may have any number of riders, male or female. Wheel discs/covers are allowed. Fairings can be one of two formats.
Type 1: Any amount of fairing is allowed, but no part of the fairing may be moved to enter, exit, start, or stop the vehicle.
Type 2: Any amount of fairing is allowed, but no more than 40% of the fairing surface may be of a hard material (i.e. composite, metal, or molded plastic), while the remaining 60% of surface area of the fairing must be of flexible, woven material (i.e. nylon, spandex). These are also known as SOCK CLASS vehicles.
Parts of the fairing can be moved to facilitate entry and exit, or stop and start of the vehicle. The rider's head must be exposed above the fairing.

These are "SUPER-STREET" vehicles:

STREAMLINER and UNLIMITED - STREAMLINER vehicles are vehicles with any number of wheels and any amount of fairing allowed. Entries may have any number of riders, male or female. Fairing panels may be moved for entry, exit, starting, or stopping. Vehicles do not need to be capable of self-start/self-stop. Vehicles without start/stop capabilities will start at the back of the pack. Rider(s) must be able to exit the vehicle unaided in case of an emergency.
