General Rules
For the most part, we use the HPRA (Human Power Race America) rules for classifying racers. We took the extra step of separating out all of the women and junior (See Junior Definition) racers into their own categories. We are also separating out Trike divisions for categories. Based on the number of participants, we reserve the right to eliminate or combine categories. Trikes will however be defined as either Stock, Super Stock, Super Street or Streamliner as defined by the Vehicle Classification Rules and thus will compete for overall points totals in the same classification as two-wheelers.
Vehicle Inspection Requirements
Vehicle requirements must be met at the time of registration on the day of the race before a rider and the vehicle can be allowed to race/practice on the PIR track. During the registration each rider will be directed to a technical inspection area where any or all of the vehicles to be raced need to meet the event requirements set forth by HPRA and ABR insurance group.
- One mirror is required. Two mirrors are highly recommended, whether it is on the vehicle, helmet or combination thereof
- Functioning independent multiple braking systems
- Helmet is nationally certified and unmodified
- Vehicle must be free from sharp edges and protrusions which might cause injury
- Vehicle must be capable of demonstrating structural integrity
Track Warning Conditions
Flag Emergency Protocol for Racers
Yellow Flag:
The Yellow Flag will be displayed on the track as a warning that an upcoming area has a “Compromised” section that riders need to be aware of. A compromised situation may be one of several occurrences, i.e. a rider/bike is disabled on the course, a participant down with slight injuries, debris or other objects on the course. These are all instances where the issue can be addressed and corrected as to allow free flow of the traffic in a timely manner. Under Yellow Flag areas, riders may ride at a race pace, but are forewarned (by the Yellow Flag) to be aware of the upcoming compromised area and to ride safely and alertly through those sections.
Red Flag:
A Red Flag will be displayed all around the track and at the start/finish area under the circumstances that the race must be abandoned immediately. All traffic on the track will be alerted to discontinue their racing efforts and to proceed around the track in a slow and safe riding mode, where they will halt at the start/finish line (stay on main course, do not exit into pit row). Riders will be alerted of the Red Flag condition by the corner/safety marshals on the course. Riders will be asked to observe the honor system of keeping and knowing their position in the race at the time of the flagged condition to determine their placement in the race. If Red Flag conditions occur after ½ hour of the Road Race, the race will be determined to be officially concluded, with positions at the time of the flagged conditions to determine rider placement. If a Red Flag appears prior to the ½ hour mark, the race committee will assess the situation and determine if continuation is feasible. A Red Flag condition in the Time Trial Race will of course halt the race. Again, riders will slow their pace and continue the lap they are currently on and stop at the start/finish line. The committee will assess the situation and determine whether to continue or to conclude the race.
Junior Category Rider Definition
Junior Category Riders are defined as being of the age of 13 and under. Any rider 14 and over is considered an adult rider.
Juniors will be attended during the Road Race and Timed Trial events by a guardian or parent. This means the accompanying rider must be 18 years of age or older, NO exceptions. This is per insurance requirements. Said responsible adult shall follow directly behind the junior rider at all times and shall assume responsibility of keeping the junior rider alert to operate and safely control the bike at all times with respect to all other riders and prevailing conditions. The Parent/Guardian must either be a registered entrant themselves in the Human Power Challenge or will need to register for the minimum insurance and membership fees. Juniors need not be accompanied by an adult during the Drag, Autocross and 200 Meter Timed events.
